Developing a Black Belt attitude: PERSEVERANCE

You can have all the talent in the world but that’s not enough. You can be incredibly strong, but that’s not enough. Persistence is the key.

  • Never give up. Just keep right on keeping on. Do not dwell on failures or defeats, do not dwell in self-pity of how ‘unfortunate’ or ‘unlucky’ you are. That’s for losers.

  • After every setback (and there will be many) get right back on the road again.

  • Perseverance is the commitment to keep going when things get hard or you lose your focus. It means not giving up until you get the result you were after.

  • “It’s just too easy to give up. While others were stopping, I was still moving forward. The limitations were the same as others, but I just kept picking myself up, dusting myself off and looking at new ways to approach the barrier.” – Andy

  • …and one of Robin’s favourites: “Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.”

A couple of quotes from famous thinkers that sum it up well:

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. – Winston Churchill

All great masters are chiefly distinguished by the power of adding a second, a third, and perhaps a fourth step in a continuous line. Many a man has taken the first step. With every additional step you enhance immensely the value of your first. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
