Developing a Black Belt attitude: POWER

Power is your own personal force moved by action, directed by momentum creating an impact.

  • Having a Black Belt Attitude your power is only directed toward good. The use of power is not the same as the use of force. Power, when directed with spirit runs free in align with the laws of nature. Power with force is limited and turns on itself.

  • Power equals choice, when we have choice we have power in our lives. This means choosing what to do and how to respond to a situation.

  • Power is energy, intensity and influence; all the things that can be used in a positive way to help you focus on your goals and help others around you.

  • Empowerment is a greater force than fear.

  • Power in life is knowing that we are totally responsible for how we feel.

“Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.” – Gandhi.

Learning awareness in martial arts

The first step is to learn to take control of the immediate space around you.

Let’s say you are the centre of a circle that extends one metre out. You become the master of your own zone controlling and monitoring who you allow in.

Most importantly you become aware that you can control that space by just accepting that it is there.

From this awareness you start to take responsibility for yourself. You control the space, no-one else. Becoming aware of this space is the first step in martial arts.

Have a great week full of power, and see you in the dojo.
