Developing a Black Belt attitude: SETTING GOALS

  • “Winners never quit and quitters never win”

  • A goal is a target, something to aim for, an objective — and it has end result. We set goals to give ourselves a purpose, something to focus on and aspire to. To achieve a goal you need all the other things that we have spoken about in our talks like focus, determination, self-control, black belt attitude, hope and endurance.

  • Your goal can be anything you choose because it is your goal – things like getting your next belt, becoming a better swimmer, getting better grades at school, learning how to ride a skateboard, spending more time with your friends or family or even getting a pet and being responsible and looking after it.

  • Decide what the goal is and plan to achieve it. Write it down. Think about what you need to do to achieve that goal, what steps you need to take along the way. Write them down. Take each step along the way. When you reach your goal, celebrate your achievement. Then… set a new goal.

  • An important part of setting goals is to try and visualise yourself having already achieved the goal. It’s important to believe that you’re completely capable of achieving the goal. It’s also important to have a plan that sets out the steps that you have to take in order to achieve your goal(s).

  • Be honest, aim for what you really want, don’t aim low to make it too easy, just so you know you will get there. It’s OK to take small steps and set targets along the way but dare to dream and be what you want to be and do what you want to do. You have as good a chance as anyone else. So aim as high as you dare.

“The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking, and don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” — Steve Jobs

Have a great week and see you in the dojo.
